Screen Acting
In our Screen Acting Workshops we like to keep things simple. Our professional actors and filmmakers host unique collaborations with young actors who enjoy being seen on Screen. Our acting facilitators aim to do what great acting experiences always show –transformation – so that when you leave a workshop, you are slightly different than when you went in.
What is a Screen Acting Workshop?
Every week a small group of Screen Actors in different age groups meet and act in drama exercises for the digital camera. We work on Screen Acting material that involves improvisations and realistic performances. We then project what we have recorded on to a large screen. We create acting storyline experiences that allow you to explore different emotions and exciting situations.
How do you make films? How do we see ourselves on a Screen?
Using digital cameras/ sound equipment and projectors we record our workshops and project this onto a large screen. With many of the longer acting dramas we also edit these before projecting these short films for your own group to see and listen to. The short films we like and agree to show may be put onto our website for your friends and family to watch too – if you want – but you decide! In the future we will be working with writers who will write short film parts for each actor.
Where are the Workshops held?
Currently our Screen Acting Academy Workshops are based in Cambridge, UK.
When do you run the Screen Acting Workshops?
Every Sunday during school time for 2 hours in the morning, Juniors (10.00-12.00), Uppers (12.00-2.00), Seniors (2.00-4.00).
Why do you run these Workshops ?
We love watching Young Actors see themselves acting on a large screen. Acting on Screen is not the same as watching people act on stage. What we all see is real, truthful and always unique. We never see the same acting experience twice because each performance is fresh and new! Oh, and we also love films …..
How long do the workshops last and how much do they cost?
Workshops run throughout the School Term and term fees per student are £217 inc VAT (early payment rate) or £227 inc VAT (term start rate).
This fee includes photographs, voice clips and automatic membership to our Film & Television Casting Agency.
Auditions
We like to see all young actors in auditions before we invite you to join our workshops. We are not looking for people who have acted before or who have been on stage or on t.v. and we certainly don’t look for “beautiful” people. We think of anyone who is committed to our workshops and open to showing us what they think and feel about themselves and other people as being actors already. We do not train you to become actors but we help you to enjoy acting more and better. We like to see people enjoying themselves and contributing to other actor’s performances. Young people can always go on to train and become professional actors later in life but you must enjoy acting and being involved in group drama first!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between acting on stage and on screen?
From our point of view it’s simple – the close-up. Our Screen Acting Workshops work with young actors to deliver realistic performances based on their ability to convince people watching that they are feeling what their character is experiencing. Whether it is slap stick comedy or drama we must believe the actor is that character on screen. We should be able to look at a young actors face on the screen and know what they are thinking - even if they are not doing anything. This is what our first film “Greenwich Mean Time” concentrated on with nothing but young actors faces telling us this quiet story. We never said acting was easy, but it is very exciting watching actors showing who they are - whilst being someone else?!
Yeah, but what is the difference for me?!?!
There is no other Screen Acting Workshop for young people in this country that provides the opportunities like we do – to only act and be seen acting on t.v./cinema/internet/dvd. This isn’t the most important thing about us but we do show you how you act by giving you the chance to watching yourself on screen. You cannot see how you look and sound on stage. “On stage - actors act. On screen, actors watch themselves acting”. You will discover how different this is.
Do you help us find professional acting work on t.v. on in films?
We have a casting agency which has been running for over 16 years. Last year we sent young actors out to over 1,000 filming days. We are often asked to recommend actors for stage, television and the cinema. Young Actors have the opportunity to be in the Young Actors Company Casting Agency.
Who runs the workshops?
We have filmmakers, actors and drama facilitators who host our workshops. Each workshop has a group of these professionals to create specific work for each group. We do not repeat work each week, or term, or year, with a group.
Can I bring a friend along to audition too?
Yes, as long as you ask them to register with us first!
What are the age groups in the workshops?
We will be running workshops for four age groups – Academy/Seniors/Uppers/Juniors.
Can I have a DVD copy of my performance?
In future we will be producing dvds of individual performances but in the meantime we will host our short film exercises on our website.
Is there anything else I should know about?
We are different from other young acting organisations because the Screen Acting Workshops for Young Actors is new. We believe that acting should not be something which is special for “talented”, “beautiful” or “rich” people but simply a chance to explore who we all are in the world that we live in. Yes, we charge for our workshops (because we have to at the moment), and yes there are some very talented, beautiful young actors with us, but we ask only that you are committed and to enjoy acting with us. We’ll work on improving the rest later …..!
